Testing Home Education – Part 6: Back to the Basics (Part 25)

We have now dealt with a few sources and manifestations of home education persecution.  Once you have found your rightful place and authority in the home, there remain two other possible sources of opposition to your plan of doing things your way, at home.

The first bit of testing may actually come from your facilitator.  Please rest assured, I am not addressing those who are enrolled with us here at Education Unlimited.  Our facilitators are all experienced unschoolers who will be your most faithful supporters.  They all recognize that true education is one that escapes school-based ideology and follows the wishes of the parents, meaning they respect parental authority.  They come to your home as your friend to encourage and support you, as well as to offer suggestions for improvement.  Their motto is “parents are the boss”.

Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case with other home education providers who may have other ideas and motivations for being engaged in home education.  Some may see themselves as having the responsibility of making sure your children are educated in keeping with government expectations.  These agencies will hire inexperienced teachers whose only qualification is a teaching certificate.  These teachers will exercise authority over parents, as self-appointed education experts.

Other agencies will say and/or do anything to assure your continued enrolment, as your family is seen more as a source of income than an opportunity for service to parents and children.  Either way, you will find your resolve to teach your children your way to be challenged or tested.  I suggest you stay clear of agencies offering this type of service.

I sometimes test dads’ resolve by telling them they will have to acknowledge my authority as teacher for the duration of my facilitation visit.  I love when they tell me I can leave out the door through which I came in!  Because, while unschooling can be described in a number of ways, I like defining it as parents reclaiming and exercising their full authority in the training of their children at home.

If you have a facilitator telling you what to do in your home education program, you likely have the wrong person doing the job.  There is a simple solution to this problem:  FIRE THEM and enroll with the parent-friendly, freedom-advancing Education Unlimited Academy. You’re the boss!
